What is a Cardboard?

It is made up of paper pulp which is pressured and glued together. The thickness of the cardboard material depends on several factors such as the manufacturing process, sheet size, and more. How Cardboard Material is Made?

Cardboard is primarily made from paper pulp derived from various sources, including recycled paper and wood fibers. Eight steps are performed during the formation of cardboard material such as pulping, cleaning, bleaching, forming, pressing, formulation, cutting, and shaping. Each step has its significance. The end cardboard consists of a fluted middle layer sandwiched between two liner board layers.
This provides strength and a smooth surface where brands can easily do their branding. We use a special cardboard manufacturing process that helps us to make our cardboard material 100% recyclable and biodegradable.
The pulping process is all about extracting cellulose and fibrous material from wood pulp. It is then used to produce paper. The pulping process ensures the wood chips that we are getting are clean and suitable for use. First, the trees are cut and transformed into the logs. It is then debarked and chipped. There are two processes mechanical and chemical. The chemical process is more popular compared to the mechanical one because it gives better separation and reduces lignin.

With the help of this process, we get the better quality paper. The mechanical process is used if you want your cardboard material to be cost-effective. It is important to note that the quality of the material is significantly reduced in the mechanical process because it involves disk grinders.
Finishing
After the pulp is prepared it is now time to convert it into cardboard material. The first step is the beating stage. In this step, the pulp is pounded and squeezed by the machines. Based on the use of material certain other derivates can be added to it such as clays, chalks, gums, and starch.

After that, the excess water is removed from it by the fourdrinier machine. Then the material is pressured between wool rollers. After that is passed through stream-heated cylinders to remove moisture. The next step involves wounding the sheet onto the wheel. The last step involves smoothing the surface. This can be done with the help of coating, winding, and calendaring.
Finishing
The cardboard’s sturdiness and protection come from its flutes, which are wavy pieces of cardboard sandwiched between two layers. This process is similar to the one used to add ruffles to hats and shirts in the 18th century. Single-wall boxes have one layer of fluting, while double-wall boxes have two layers for extra strength. The thickness of the flute determines the grade, with A, B, C, E, and R-grade flutes available.

Solid unbleached board (SUB) is a type of paperboard made primarily from unbleached chemical pulp. It typically has 2-3 layers of mineral. SUB also has a synthetic pigment coating on the top. And one layer on the reverse side. SUB is known for its durability, strength, and smooth printable surface, making it suitable for packaging applications such as food, beverages, consumer electronics, and more.

4: Chipboard

Chipboard is a type of cardboard that is made up of recycled material such as wood waste, and paper. It is similar to cardboard but without the corrugated layers. Chipboard comes in various thicknesses. So, it's entirely up to you which one you want to go for.
